The Summertown Eagles came up short on the road Friday night, falling 23-9 to Decatur County Riverside. Despite the loss, the Eagles still control their own destiny heading into the final week of the regular season, with a region championship and home playoff game on the line.

After a scoreless first quarter, Riverside struck first to take an 8-0 lead early in the second. Summertown answered almost immediately when McKaleb Powell broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 8-6.

The Eagles took the lead just before halftime when Peyton Kimbrough connected on a 19-yard field goal with 18 seconds remaining, sending Summertown into the locker room with a 9-8 advantage.

Riverside regained the lead midway through the third quarter on a 59-yard touchdown run by Jack Cupples. The Panthers added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter to secure the 23-9 victory.

Powell led the Summertown offense with 95 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Eli Shaffer added 44 yards on four attempts, while Austin Reed contributed 30 yards and Colton Pugh finished with 20. The Eagles totaled 195 rushing yards on the night.

Defensively, Jake Pettus came up with a big play for Summertown, recording an interception and returning it 51 yards.

While Friday night’s result was disappointing, the Eagles still have everything to play for.

Summertown will return home next Friday night to face Adamsville in a matchup that will decide the region championship and determine who earns the opportunity to host a first-round playoff game.
